Screening Mammography

What is a screening mammogram?

A screening mammogram is a simple x-ray of the breast that is used to find breast cancers before you can feel them.  At BBDC, our mammography system offers the largest field of view, allowing for precision imaging of diverse body types. The system features outstanding image quality, along with advanced viewing features for crystal-clear detail throughout the breast. We offer both 2D and 3D mammography to all patients.

In addition, to further improve cancer detection, we use a tool called computer aided detection (CAD). CAD is a sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) program that helps the radiologist in determining which areas on the image may be of concern. It has been shown to improve accuracy on mammograms. At BBDC, all mammograms are read with the assistance of CAD.  We use an AI CAD program called Profound AI.

Why should I have a mammogram?

Most breast cancers develop in women with no family history of breast cancer or other risk factors.  For this reason, we recommended that all women 40 years old and over should have a mammogram every year to check for abnormalities that may show the early stages of breast cancer.

Women with family histories of breast cancer should consult their doctors about the need for starting annual mammography before the age of 40.

How are 2D and 3D mammograms different?

A 2D Mammogram includes 2 images of the left breast and 2 images of the right breast.  Each of the pictures shows the breasts as a flat image.  It is similar to how a photo of the beach looks.

A 3D Mammogram is a twist on the standard 2D Mammogram.  The breast is positioned the same way for both a 2D and a 3D mammogram. However, during a 3D Mammogram, pictures are taken through the breast.  This allows us to scroll through the breast.  It is like looking through the pages of a book.

Looking through the breast using 3D makes it easier to find some cancers, especially in women who have dense breast tissue.  3D mammograms also reduce the number of extra mammogram pictures that might be needed.  The radiation dose of a 3D mammogram is higher than a 2D mammogram but within the accepted standard of radiation dose.

Whether you get a 2D mammogram or a 3D mammogram, the experience will take about 10 minutes for our healthcare provider to acquire the images.

Do you use AI for your mammogram evaluations?

Yes!  We an AI tool on every mammogram that we interpret.  The AI tool is like a second set of eyes, to make sure we don't miss a breast cancer.  The AI tool that we using is called Profound AI.
